The television channel ARTE (abbreviation for Association Relative à la Télévision Européenne) is a public broadcaster headquartered in Strasbourg, France. In 1990, representatives of France and the old German states signed the contract that formed the basis for ARTE. In 1996 the new federal states were added. Arte went on air for the first time on May 30, 1992. The television channel ARTE structurally consists of three parts. The headquarters where the program is coordinated is in Strasbourg. Arte France, based in Issy-les-Moulineaux near Paris, produces the French-language programs. The German contributions come from Arte Deutschland in Baden-Baden. The programs are available online with subtitles in 6 languages. Arte broadcasts a full program with a focus on culture, Europe and the communication of information from preferably unusual perspectives. The highlights of the program include numerous documentary series about history, recordings of concerts or theater performances as well as documentaries about art and architecture. ARTE has also been broadcasting the weekly short film magazine “Kurzschaltung” for several years, which, in addition to reports on festivals or portraits of directors, also always shows some full-length short films.
